The Preliminary CTE Teaching Credential Program is designed for industry professionals and combines teaching knowledge and skills with technical and occupational knowledge. CTE Credential holders have increased job opportunities, help students connect college preparation with post-secondary career readiness, work with career pathways and connect schools to private industry.
The Preliminary CTE Credential is issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC). It is valid for three years and authorizes the CTE candidate to teach one or more subjects in the industry sector named on the credential in grades twelve and below and in classes organized primarily for adults in career technical, trade, or vocational courses. Your employing school district will determine, based on your work and educational experiences, which particular subjects you may teach within the industry sector (see industry sectors below). At the end of the successful completion of the two-year CTE Credential Program, preliminary credential candidates will be recommended to the CCTC for a Clear CTE Teaching Credential.
The mission of the CTE Teaching Credential Program is to support industry professionals in obtaining a teaching credential and delivering industry expertise so that every student is empowered to reach their unique potential through innovative opportunities that lead to success in postsecondary achievement, career readiness, and community enrichment.
